Vienna Mayor Pro-Tem Elected GMA President

Vienna's Mayor Pro-Tem Mayor Beth English was elected as President for the Georgia Municipal Association this past week.

According to a GMA release, Beth English is the third public official from Vienna to serve as GMA's president in the association's 80-year long history.

Dooly County's minority population has reached 56.5 percent, according to Census Bureau statistics and USATODAY research. Macon County's is 66.1 percent.

Pollen Count 'High' in the Macon Area

Some mixed news for allergy sufferers:

While the tree pollen count is still high at 1420, that's down from last Wednesday's 3,600 count, according to Dr. Plaxico's Allergy and Asthma Clinic in Macon.

Weeds and grass pollen count is now in the moderate range. That count is up from last week when the weed pollen was absent and the grass count was observed as low.

Amateur Radio Class, Exam Offered in Montezuma

Ham radios is one way to communicate when all of our other modern technology goes out due to weather situations.

The Amateur Radio operators, sometimes called "hams," prove to be backup communication in such instances, according to a release. To participate in the Amateur Radio Service, you need a FCC license.

Central Georgia Amateur Radio Emergency Service members will give a one-day cram session on Saturday, May 18. This class prepares attendees for the FCC amateur radio exam. You then can take the exam the same day after the class.

The class will be held at the Macon County Emergency Management Agency office at 718 Plum Street, Montezuma, Georgia, beginning at 8 a.m. The exam will be given at 4 p.m.
